The hacking on September 17
Last night, we were hacked. We managed to identify and fix the vulnerability and get PS back up and running in a matter of hours, but the attacker did make off with a database dump.
Our passwords are stored in an encrypted format and are relatively difficult to brute-force (technical details: we were using bcrypt) but you should change yours anyway. That includes on PS, and everywhere else you were using the same password (you should not use the same password everywhere else). Other than that, there's no need to worry: our passwords are encrypted enough that you have plenty of time to change your password before it's a problem.

A poll feature for the sim has been implemented, which allows rooms to run their own polls. They are a nice built-in alternative for the many straw polls ran by various rooms. These polls are limited to one poll at a time per room, and display in the room when they're created, ended, or when someone joins the room. We're still in early development with this feature, so we'll appreciate any suggestions done to make things better. Enjoy!

Congratulations to chechnya for winning the Academics room's Jeopardy tournament after defeating Weebl and AnthemOfTheWorld in the final round! If you would like to join the next tour, take this test and PM SteelEdges a screenshot of your results on Smogon forums if you pass to receive information on the next step.
The OM Mediocremons has been replaced by Hidden Type, and Smogon Doubles Ubers, LC UU, and Smogon Doubles UU now have ladders! Head over to their respective threads for information and discussion of these metagames.

PSPL II, OMs, Monotype News, and Tier Updates
The first week of PSPL II has officially begun! For the first stage of the tournament, the group stage, our teams are placed into eight groups of four. Within each group, the four teams will battle each other once over a three week period. At the end of this stage, the two highest ranked teams in each group will advance while the other two will be eliminated. Check out the current match-ups and cheer on your favorite rooms!
The Other Metagame of the Month for September is Haxmons! If you are not familiar with this metagame, read the official thread here. The Pokemon Throwback OM for this month is Gen III 1v1, which follows the bans and clauses of Gen III OU. Alphabet Cup has been replaced by Mediocremons and other new additions include Smogon Triples, 350 Cup, OM Mashup, and PU. Head over to our Other Metas room to discuss these formats and compete in the daily tournaments!
OU Monotype is now known simply as Monotype after implementing a major change in its tiering system. Instead of following the OU metagame, the banlist is now catered specifically to Monotype and comprised of two categories. The first category deals with global bans and states which Pokemon cannot be used anywhere in the tier. The second category deals with more complex type bans, where Pokemon or items are only banned if used on a specific monotype team. Try out the new ladder and discuss your experiences either in the thread or here in our Monotype room!
Three months have passed since our last usage-based tier update, so this month brings another one! For an explanation of the update and a list of which Pokemon have shifted to new tiers, head over to this thread prepared by Antar.

Balanced Hackmons is now enforcing the EV limit of 510 and Team Preview. These changes correspond to the XY game mechanics.

Tournaments updates, Triples formats, and suspect test
Our tournament script has gotten better, so the Tournaments room is now our second Official Room! It's a fun alternative to the ladder, and supports several formats like Round Robin, Single Elimination and Double Elimination. We've worked hard to get here, so you should give it a try!
We also have some new XY Triples formats: Random Battle and Pikachu Tournamentchu on the ladder, and some others off! Pikachu Tournamentchu is a format where you must use Pikachu and any Pokemon that's not fully evolved.
We have some suspect tests! OU is testing Aegislash (2700 COIL to vote). The test ends on Saturday, July 26th. LC is has a discussion-based suspect (1950 COIL to vote), ending on Friday, July 25th. Good luck, everyone!

The Player & Social Media Room launch
We've launched a PS webzine! Named The Player, it's a source for articles written by the community related to all aspects of PS. Read the introductory thread first, and if you're interested in writing for us check out the article submission guide and contributor guidelines (they don't take too long to read, and are well worth doing so). If you've got a brief question you'd like to ask, our SQSA thread should cover you there. We've had a fantastic response already in terms of articles and art, and expect to release our first issue in late July. We'd love to have you as a contributor too!
To tie in with the release of The Player, the Youtube room has been renamed Media! It's still the same room and still retains a focus on Youtube, but it's had a rename in order to emphasize that other social media sites like Facebook, Twitch and Twitter are very welcome as discussion topics in the room.

OMs, Doubles Challenge, Suspect Tests, and Tier Updates!
The Other Metagame of the Month for July is Mediocre-Mons! If you are not familiar with this metagame, read the official thread here. Another new OM is Pokemon Throwback, in which a popular OM will be applied to a past generation each month. Head over to our Other Metas room to discuss these formats and the many other metagames that we offer!
The Doubles room has a new event: the Ladder Tournament Challenge! To participate, simply create an alt that starts with the letters “LT” and battle on the Smogon Doubles ladder. Be sure to read the thread for full rules and instructions!
Several suspect tests are currently in progress! OU is testing Deoxys-Defense and Deoxys-Speed until Monday, July 7th. It’s not too late to participate! Achieve a COIL of 2700 on the OU (suspect test) ladder for a chance to vote. RU is having a test of Shuckle that is also ending Monday, July 7th. To be eligible for voting, players are required to achieve a COIL of 2400 on the RU (suspect test) ladder.
In other tiers, Staraptor’s retesting in UU has resulted in a ban to BL with Tornadus-Therian next in line for a retest, while Sigilyph was banned from NU!

Pokémon Charity, Tier Updates, Room Updates
The Speed Gamers community are doing a week long Pokemon charity marathon ending on June 27th, where they will attempt to collect every Pokemon throughout the series! They have already collected nickname donations from numerous participants, and you even have a chance to see your favorite Pokemon with a name of your choice here!
The voting phase for Baton Pass has ended. Players in OU are no longer allowed to have more than 3 Baton Pass users on their teams. After lengthy discussion, the Swagger ban was also extended to Ubers. In the lower tiers, Froslass has been banned from RU, Volcarona and Alakazite removed from UU, and Staraptor is currently up for suspect voting. Stick around here for updates on the results soon!
The Studio and The Happy Place rooms now have built-in plugins! In The Studio, users can now nominate an artist as the 'Artist of the Day', and the winning artist will be discussed in the room and have their music posted throughout the day. The Happy Place's plugin will provide a series of inspirational quotes to be set and shown to the room daily. Be sure to check them out!

&Slayer95, New Driver, Staff Departures, Rooms and Events!
Slayer95 was promoted to Leader through his exceptional contributions related to programming on the server! On the other hand, Joim (Administrator) and TalkTakesTime (Moderator) have retired from the Pokémon Showdown staff. Joim has made a lifetime's worth of improvements and additions to the site throughout his time as a staff member and programmer, and was always an extremely approachable user who made the sim a more fun and enjoyable place for everyone. TalkTakesTime has made a lot of great additions to the server, namely the development of boTTT, implementing several commands and features for the server, and making the Tech & Code room a thing. We wish the two the best of luck in their future endeavors!
New rooms have been added to the server, while Pokemon In-Game has been rebranded to Meteor Falls. This rename provides an aesthetically appealing twist to the upcoming Pokémon games (Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) while still allowing discussion of anything related to casual Pokémon and more! The new rooms include a Chess room for discussion of the widely popular board game itself, while Scandinavia is our newest language based on languages of the northern Germanic countries in Europe!
Meanwhile regarding current room events, the Sports Room is hosting a fantasy league for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. If you're interested in joining, register, head over to "My Leagues" and search for the "PS league". In other news, Doubles Room will be having a standardized schedule for scripted tournaments. For more information on the scheduling, visit here.
Finally, Kostitsyn-kun was promoted to Driver for being an exceptional contributor in rooms across the server, particularly Anime and Manga and Debates and Discussions. Congratulations!

We also have a new way to switch between chatrooms: Just press Left or Right while the textbox is empty. If you're on the downloadable client, Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab also work.
And if you type someone's name in chat, it'll give them a notification and highlight the message (you can turn this off in the Options menu as usual).
Also, I recently fixed faint order order (with some help from V4): now, if your last two Pokémon both faint on the last turn, instead of being a tie, the Pokémon that faints last wins.
